Mimicry

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

“mimicry, in biology, phenomenon characterized by the superficial resemblance of two or more organisms that are not closely related taxonomically. This resemblance confers an advantage—such as protection from predation—upon one or both organisms by which the organisms deceive the animate agent of natural selection.”

People sometimes may struggle to keep in touch with their friends via chat messengers. Large language models such as GPT-3 are capable of giving astonishingly good answers to prompts. What if one could use an Ai to frequently drop off a message on their friend's phone, instead of writing it by themselves, or even solve a personal disagreement? With the work “Mimicry” we want to explore the means of this possibility by asking how chat conversations constitute the relationship between its participants, how this could be altered by using an Ai participant, and to what extent the Ai resembles its user. Could we define this Ai as our personal representative agent or our extension? Can we go further and interpret AI as a copy of its user?

We assume that both the frequency of messages sent and their content can affect a chat. Hence, the interposition of an AI deforms the quality of the conversation. When we chat with a person, we would expect it to be that very person we are chatting with. Hence the conversation may be perceived with great suspicion, as fellow players in games like "Among Us". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Among_Us

Edmond Rostand's play "Cyrano de Bergerac" depicts a young cadet who is not only a fabulous duelist but also musically gifted and an outstanding poet. But because of his big nose, he does not dare to express love for his distant cousin Roxanne. When the cadet Christian falls in love with Roxane, he asks Cyrano to help him share his feelings. Cyrano writes love letters that are signed with Christian's name, and Roxane does not perceive that it is Cyrano's words that cause her to fall in love.

Who does Roxanne fall in love with? Are Cyrano and Christian a collective person?
